To see for ourselves whether unsafe products are on sale to consumers, we went shopping this summer at more than a dozen stores in five states: California, Florida, Illinois, New York, and Texas. We visited dollar stores, drugstores, close-out centers, and other discount stores, buying toys that appeared to contain inappropriately small parts, iffy electrical items, and other suspect products.
