The ACT Government is locked in a Mexican stand-off with federal Treasurer Peter Costello on tax after rejecting his ultimatum to abolish stamp duty within seven days or face consequences.

Mr Costello told Government MPs and senators yesterday that the states had until next Wednesday's annual treasurers' conference to commit to cutting state-based taxes, including stamp duty and payroll tax.

''The Treasurer... said that the 23rd of March was D-Day for the states to agree to abolish those state taxes,'' a party room spokesman said.
