Of the 200 vehicles that we have recently tested, only 21 have earned high ratings in all our major ratings areas. That includes 13 cars and 8 SUVs (see "Quick Picks"). The Subaru Impreza WRX STi, our "Fun to Drive" Top Pick, rated especially well across the board.
No vehicles for which we have ratings in all areas did poorly in every area, although the Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL SUVs came the closest.
Other trends in this year's Ratings point to good news for consumers in terms of fuel economy safety, and reliability:
* There are now 33 vehicles in our Ratings that achieved 25 mpg or higher in overall fuel economy There were 20 last year and only 17 three years ago.
* The number of vehicles that have the highest rating in both safety areas in our chart--accident avoidance and crash protection--has grown to 15, from 7 last year and only 2 three years ago. Similarly the number with average or lower scores in both areas has decreased to only 8, from 21 in 2002.
* The percentage of vehicles earning our lowest predicted reliability rating has decreased to 14 percent from 19 percent last year. There was no change in the percentage with the highest rating.
