The number of natural catastrophes across the globe in 2004 was no higher than the average of the past 10 years but economic losses were the worst in history, according to Munich Re.

In its report Topics Geo - Annual Review: Natural Catastrophes 2004, the reinsurer stated: "Throughout the world, natural catastrophes claimed the lives of more than 180,000 people, more than twice as many as in 2003.
