THE Church would be hypocritical to turn its back on homosexuals because it has profited endlessly from countless gay clergymen throughout the centuries, a leading Church of Ireland canon said yesterday.

Demonising homosexuals was not acceptable; they should be free to worship Christ and receive communion, he added.

Canon John Bartlett, former principal of the Theological College, which trains priests in the Church of Ireland, was speaking to the congregation at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin yesterday.
