AN 80-year-old woman had a miraculous escape on Saturday evening when her car exploded in a fireball in the middle of a busy dual carriageway flyover in Co Clare.

The pensioner - a retired farmer from the east of the county - was driving along the N18 Newmarket-on-Fergus bypass, when the engine of her Citroen Xantia estate car burst into flames.

The woman braked suddenly and barely managed to escape the inferno as thick black smoke began to fill the vehicle.

A passing motorist rushed to her aid and led her off the busy roadway to the hard shoulder.
