Section: General News - Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit yesterday put the spotlight on three transportation mega-projects, saying it was critical they be implemented in the next four years, while the Thai Rak Thai Party was still in power, The Nation reports.
The three projects require a total investment of about Bt676 billion.
He said extension of the underground and elevated rail networks; an increase in the capacity of the Laem Chabang Deep Sea Port; and construction of a bypass road from Samut Sakhon to Cha-am were all top priorities for the Thaksin administration.
Aside from these three specific projects, he said the administration also wanted to improve the nation's highway system as a whole.
"After four years of healing and strengthening our economy, we have to prepare for strong, sustainable growth. We have to provide the basic infrastructure, particularly in transportation, to lay down a firm foundation for our development to proceed," said Suriya in a speech to the German-Thai Chamber of Commerce.
Suriya said the rail extension would cost about US$15 billion, or about Bt600 billion. He was quick to allay any concerns in the foreign community about the massive cost, saying less than a third of it would be shouldered by the government's ...
