Section: General News - Government vows to go slow; needs time to assess impact of this week's move, The Nation reports.
As oil prices hovered near recent highs on Thursday, Energy Minister Prommin Lertsuridej stressed the government would not raise the diesel price again this month because it first wanted to assess the impact of Tuesday's price hike.
"We will evaluate the economic impact of the latest diesel price hike before considering another increase. The increase will definitely be gradual," Prommin said.
Higher oil prices in world markets were held up by expectations of continuing cold weather in the United States that should boost demand for thinning heating-oil inventories.
US crude oil rose 17 cents to US$51.34 (Bt2,000) a barrel yesterday, holding near Wednesday's near four-month high of $51.60 ahead of US weekly inventory data.
Prices have soared by about $6 in the past two weeks, fuelled by tightening global-oil-market forecasts this year, fears of an Opec production cut and colder northern hemisphere weather.
