From July, and well in time for the number plate change in September 2005, UK motorists will be able to see at a glance whether their new car is green, clean and lean, writes David Miles.

Improved environmental labels will be on every new car in every showroom or sales forecourt. In addition to CO2 emissions, estimated annual fuel costs and VED rates, the label includes information on fuel, average fuel consumption and engine size. These energy-rating labels are similar to those displayed on washing machines and fridges.
