"The triple play'' is this year's catch phrase from the 3GSM World Congress here last week. Like its predecessors third generation and Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem, the phrase means different things depending on who is speaking.
The triple play in its most immediate sense means that technology can be distributed over three access pipes: DSL, cable and wireless, especially once wireless broadband technologies are widely deployed. The triple play also describes the movement between the home environment, the workplace and the mobile world. Others say the movement is actually between the home, office and the car, and adding mobility actually results in a quadruple play. Another quadruple play is voice, data, entertainment and mobility.
