Almost every week, Iris Thomas hears a story of how her husband affected someone's life.
For four decades, the Rev. Lorenzo Thomas has variously served as a civil rights leader, a police officer, a drug counselor and a prison chaplain.
He will be recognized Friday for his contributions to the community. The Harold E. Byrd Education Foundation is sponsoring a retirement celebration, appreciation roast and benefit for Thomas, who had a stroke in October.
Thomas, 60, of Bradenton, has been active in Sarasota and Manatee counties since the 1960s, when he joined the civil rights efforts here.
