The provisional estimate of business investment, measured in chained volume terms seasonally adjusted (CVMSA), for the fourth quarter of 2004 was 0.7 per cent higher than the previous quarter and 4.9 per cent higher than the fourth quarter of 2003.The fourth quarter figure was GBP29,682 million.

The provisional estimate of business investment (CVMSA) by private and public sector manufacturing for the fourth quarter fell by 0.1 per cent since the previous quarter and rose by 3.6 per cent since the fourth quarter of 2003. The fourth quarter figure was GBP3,502 million.

Within the private sector, the provisional estimates of business investment (CVMSA) for the fourth quarter show that both services, and construction and other production rose by 1.3 per cent since the previous quarter. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2003, services rose by 6.3 per cent while construction and other production fell by 2.1 per cent. The fourth quarter figures were GBP3,223 million for construction and other production and GBP22,296 million for services.

The provisional estimate of business investment (CVMSA) by non-manufacturing public corporations fell by 15.0 per cent since the previous quarter and rose by 3.6 per cent since the fourth quarter of 2003.The fourth quarter figure was GBP661 million.
