AON has published an update on the 26 December 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake/tsunami.
According to the company, the M9.0 event was the strongest earthquake on the planet since 1964, and the fourth-largest since 1900. The most severely affected areas were Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Maldives.
Over 290,000 people are dead, missing or unaccounted for - a figure including around 3900 tourists.
In Aceh, Indonesia, the wave swept inland for up to 10 miles affecting thousands of the communities. Around 228,900 people were reported killed or missing in this region alone. Insurance cover, however, is limited in this region. West Java and the capital, Jakarta, where more insured exposure is located, experienced no damage.
