Currently, Lloyd's reputation is as high as it has ever been since the onset of its troubles in the late 1980s. In the late summer, it was upgraded by AM Best and Fitch, respectively from 'A- Excellent' to 'A Excellent' and from 'A-' to 'A'. Nonetheless, Lloyd's can still fairly be said to be drinking in the Last Chance Saloon. Lloyd's has lost GBP8bn in each of the two most recent downcycles. In the first down phase, about half the GBP8bn was due to extra reserving for asbestos and pollution.
