TOP officials from a UK teaching union have failed to win round angry members in Co Down over the dismissal of a popular branch secretary.
Pat Le Rew, president of the National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT), and Deputy General Secretary Jerry Bartlett met about 50 members of the south Down/Armagh branch in the Canal Court Hotel in Newry last week..
The controversy surrounds the dismissal of the area's branch secretary of 20 years' standing, Richard Egan.
Mr Egan was a long-standing economics teacher in Newry but recently took up a post in Lurgan.
Senior officials then held he was no longer teaching in the area and he was dismissed as branch secretary.
