Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) - A South African opposition party, the Independent Democrats, has urged President Thabo Mbeki's government to do more to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the relatively industrialised country.

The party was reacting to Wednesday's coming into force of the Kyoto international climate treaty.

"This is a necessary first step that the international community has taken in confronting the global threat of climate change. The Kyoto Protocol, however, is only a very small step and far more action is required from all countries of the world to avert the effects of climate …
