It all began with Half-Life.

Before massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) became a fad, there was Counter-Strike. Every network gaming shop was filled to the brim with kids and adults alike wholly immersed in the team- based first-person shooter (FPS) game. Starting only as a mod (modification) of Half-Life, Counter-Strike offered a simple gaming objective: two groups (terrorists and counterterrorists) shoot each other to kingdom come in round-based battles.
