A MESSY week was how one suezmax broker described the past few days, with virtually all the activity isolated to West Africa.

That region was busy in the wake of Chinese New Year.

However, elsewhere, from the Black Sea across the Mediterranean and into the North Sea, activity was scarce. As a result, rates which had managed to cling on for the beginning of the week have begun to slip, though, as one cynical London broker noted, there is no need to shed tears for the owners just yet as the rates are still very profitable.
