UN sets standard for child protection in armed conflicts.

Dakar, Senegal (PANA) - UN secretary general Kofi Annan submitted a report Wednesday to the Security Council proposing an action plan for the protection of children exposed to armed conflict around the world.

According to a release from the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict, this is the first time a comprehensive monitoring and compliance mechanism is being put in place for this purpose.

The Security Council will discuss the report in a public debate on 23 February.

"This is a very big day for millions of children who are being brutalised in situations of armed conflict," Under Secretary- General Olara A. Otunnu stated.
