The responsibility for training doctors rests with private hospitals and not the government or the Hospital Authority, the dean of Hong Kong University's (HKU) medical faculty Lam Shiu-kam said Tuesday.

While agreeing there were limitations, Lam said private hospitals, like big organizations in other sectors, should invest in training their own professionals.

``Professional training should be done by professionals. The government doesn't train lawyers or engineers, who are trained by their own profession,'' Lam told the university vice chancellor's spring gathering.
