There are at least six types of DVD hardware competing for your dollar. Plain players dominate, but various types of player-recorders are gaining, including some that accept both videotape and discs. Our tests show that some players come close to being a universal machine that can handle just about any disc format.
Our latest tests also lead us to believe that people should be slightly skeptical of a premium-priced feature turning up on some recorders and players--outputs intended to maximize picture quality with high-definition TV sets.
