DaimlerChrysler has recalled some 600,000 Dodge Durango and Dakota trucks and sport-utility vehicles. Suspension components could corrode and wear prematurely, causing front-end noise or uneven tire wear. The corrosion could cause the wheels to come off.
The recalled vehicles were from the 2000 to 2003 model years and have four wheel drive and a four-speed transmission. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received about 20 reports of incidents involving suspension problems. Max Gates, a DaimlerChrysler spokesman, said the automaker has received 49 reports of upper ball-joint separation in vehicles affected by the recall, including an unspecified number in which wheels separated completely. Neither the automaker nor the federal government has received reports of injuries related to this recall.
