SEOUL, Oct 2 Asia Pulse - South Korea is rapidly moving toward an "aged society" with the percentage of people aged 65 years or more expected to reach 9.5 per cent this year, a government report showed Sunday.
The report compiled by the National Statistical Office (NSO) said that the country is expected to become an aged society in 2018 with the ratio topping 14 per cent.
An aged society refers to more than 14 per cent of the populace aged 65 or older. South Korea became an aging society in 2000 and is expected to become a "super-aged society" in 2026, the office said.
A super-aged society refers to a society that has 20 per cent of its population aged 65 or older.
