BANGKOK (XFN-ASIA) - Thailand's junta has enshrined its power in an interim constitution, approved by revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, ahead of the formal naming of a new prime minister.
The interim charter, read out in full on national television this morning, was announced 12 days after the military ousted Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in a bloodless coup.
The charter will be in effect until a new permanent constitution is written ahead of promised elections in October 2007.
Here are the main points of the interim constitution:
- The junta, which will formalize its role in government under the title of the Council for National Security (CNS), will appoint a new prime minister, who can then appoint up to 35 ministers to cabinet.
- The junta has the power to remove any prime minister under the orders of the chairman of the CNS, coup leader General Sonthi Boonyaratglin.
