KABUL (XFN-ASIA) - NATO said will take command of foreign troops who had been under US authority in eastern Afghanistan in a "few days", completing its expansion across the country.
The alliance endorsed the expansion at a meeting of its defence ministers in Brussels on Thursday but gave no date for the move.
The expansion of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) into the eastern areas will see up to 12,000 US troops come under NATO control, a spokesman for the alliance told reporters in the capital.
"Within a few days, on a date yet to be finally decided, you will see the completion of the steady expansion of ISAF," Mark Laity told a media briefing.
"When the regional command east comes under ISAF command, it will lead to 10,000-12,000 US troops coming under ISAF/NATO authority."
Around another 8,000 US troops in the east will remain under the US-led coalition which has been commanding the area, he said.
