TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd will commercialize a compact nuclear reactor for sale to US power companies in and after 2011, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported, citing company sources.

The 1,200-megawatt reactor will be based on the firm's advanced pressurized water reactor (APWR) for the domestic market and modified to meet safety standards set by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the report said.

The move follows the company's announcement earlier this year that it will sell the world's largest nuclear reactor, capable of generating about 1,700 mw of electricity, in the US.
