THE principle of guarding against age discrimination in the workplace is a good one. It is wrong to discriminate against employees on the grounds of age, just as it is wrong to treat someone differently because of their sex or race. Our view is that British society fails to make enough use of the older generation who are too often considered by employers to be "over the hill". Age brings with it qualities such as wisdom, maturity and invaluable experience. But, while recognising the value of those qualities, there must also be a recognition that the ageing process also comes with complications that create management challenges.
