With hidden compartments for powder and lipstick in its body, beak, and tail, Salvador Dali's "Bird in Hand"-a three-in-one cosmetics compact created by the Surrealist artist in 1950-was as much statement piece as practical necessity. Taking their cues from art, fashion, and even chocolate, this season's extravagant compacts are equally inspired.
