Bausch & Lomb is urging soft-contact-lens wearers to stop using its ReNu with MoistureLoc cleaning solution until the source of an infection that could lead to blindness is determined.
At press time, there were 102 confirmed cases of the rare fungal infection known as Fusarium keratitis. Of the cases on which the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has complete data, more than half involved patients who reported using ReNu with MoistureLoc. Patients also reported using other ReNu products, and products made by other companies.
In a written statement, Bausch & Lomb said that after extensive testing, analysis, and expert review, there's no scientific evidence to establish ReNu with MoistureLoc as the cause of the infection. Nevertheless, the company has pulled the products from stores while the probe is under way to determine whether there's even a casual relationship between the solution and the outbreak.
