Health savings accounts.(Letter to the editor)
Thank goodness for May's Viewpoint, "False Promises: 'Consumer Driven' Health Plans." My husband's employer has switched us to a health savings account (HSA), and I despise it. It's scary, confusing, and I fear getting ill. Our insurance plan used to give me a comforting sense of security, but now I feel worried.

When a patient is put in the position of having to pay most charges out of pocket, he suddenly takes great interest in what each procedure, test, or drug will cost. This phenomenon of ownership of the healthcare financing process is essential if we are to rein in costs. Government-funded HSAs can care for the poor population. The genius of this system is that it makes the consumer-rich, poor, or middle class-consider cost consequences prior to purchasing health care.
