So now it could be Craig Krenzel's turn at quarterback; he replaced Jonathan Quinn in the second half against the Bucs. Quinn lacks pocket presence, throws high too often and can't move the chains. Krenzel has better intangibles and a national championship ring, but in this universe he's raw as the Lake Michigan wind. The team worked out Tim Couch, but the shoulder tendinitis that led to his release by the Packers still is evident. And memories of sore-shouldered Jim Miller in 2002 still are fresh.... Bad offense has led to a Pro Bowl run by P Brad Maynard, who has a 39.1 net average and 12 punts inside the 20.... Hurting MLB Brian Urlacher (hamstring) is having trouble staying with running backs he would run with easily when healthy. OFFENSIVE SYSTEM CHECK: The attempt at a version of Kansas City's offense isn't working since QB Rex Grossman's injury. Defenses put eight men in the box, stop RB Thomas Jones and harass whoever is at quarterback.--Mike Mulligan

Fourth-year DT Shaun Rogers is having his best season. Rogers, who had weight and concentration issues in the past, has improved his focus. He's deceptively quick for his size (6-4, 335) and is nearly unblockable one-on-one. He blows up running plays and collapses the pocket on passing downs.... The Lions are getting solid play out of several backups, including WR Reggie Swinton and FB Stephen Trejo. Both were cut in training camp but had been with the team in previous seasons and picked up their roles quickly upon returning. OFFENSIVE SYSTEM CHECK: The team's West Coast offense will succeed only if QB Joey Harrington is accurate early in games. The Lions don't have the kind of power running game that dominates the line of scrimmage, so they have to throw early to soften the defense and get the safety out of the box. Harrington was effective against the Giants because he identified opportunities and was aggressive in pursuing them.--Tom Kowalski
