Mike Martz has become quite the punching bag. He burns timeouts. He wastes replay challenges. He throws too much. He goes overboard with praise for some of his players and staff.
Martz catches a lot of flak, and I'm not sure why. There's some merit to the criticism--I'm still wondering why Martz is so happy with defensive coordinator Larry Marmie---but listening to his detractors, you'd think the guy couldn't coach a Pop Warner team. Fact is, he's one of the best coaches in the NFL.
Look at his record. After helping St. Louis win a Super Bowl as Dick Vermeil's offensive coordinator in 1999, he replaced Vermeil and has directed the Rams to the playoffs in four of his five seasons as head coach. During that span, only Mike Sherman (four times) and Andy Reid and Tony Dungy (five each) have matched or bettered that mark. Under Martz, the Rams have won two NFC West titles and one NFC championship while compiling a regular-season record of 51-29.
That isn't good enough for some people, I guess, because he hasn't won a Super Bowl. Well, only one coach out of 32 wins a Super Bowl each year, and I know there is more than one great coach in the league at a time. That's not a fair barometer.
