NFC focus: upgrade lowdown.(NFL)

Defensive end is a glaring concern for the 49ers. RE Andre Carter (back) was out most of this season and hasn't developed into the speedy, productive pass rusher the team anticipated he would become. E Andrew Williams has been something of a bust, and injuries prevented E Brandon Whiting from making an impact this season. The team needs more consistent pressure from the edges so it doesn't have to rely so much on blitzes. ... Wide receiver will be a priority for the Bears in the draft; the team needs a No. 1 receiver and maybe a No. 2. Justin Gage, who had only 12 receptions this season, might be the most promising of the team's receivers, and new offensive coordinator Ron Turner has mentioned getting him more involved. ... A ballhawking free safety is high on the Saints' wish list. Starting Ss Jay Bellamy and Tebucky Jones have only five interceptions combined the past two seasons. If a new safety can't be found, the team could move a cornerback with good ball skills, such as Jason Craft, to free safety on passing downs.
