[1] POLL POSITION
There's been much ado but nothing new
We all were raised in this country to believe that voting is both a right and a privilege, but years of watching the system fail have convinced me not to participate. I am a conscientious objector.
Oh, I cast my vote for president. But I refuse to vote in The Associated Press college basketball poll. I've turned it down twice.
Perhaps the greatest problem with polls in college sports--aside from the fact so many take them so seriously--is that most of the voters aren't using the same standards. Are they voting for talent? For achievement? Do they favor strength of schedule or margin of victory?
One of the amazing developments of this season is that Illinois has built an 18-0 record that includes double-digit victories over Wake Forest, Cincinnati, Oregon and Arkansas, and many still were questioning the Illini's claim to the top ranking last week. Why? North Carolina was playing extremely well. Then, the Tar Heels lost--to Wake, another of the fashionable favorites.
The college basketball season has gone on for more than two months now, and we're pretty much back where we started--with the same teams clogging the tops of all the polls.
