Building on the success of their firs six volumes of Classic Favorites, Paul Sheftel and Phyllis Alpert Lehrer have expanded their collection with More Classic Favorites (thirty-one pieces by nineteen composers in Volume 1). The introductory pages include "Observations and Suggestions" about practice preparation and valuable information about problem-solving techniques. Composer biographies precede the musical offerings and are unusually substantial for this early-intermediate level.
Along with some familiar favorites, students and teachers will delight in several new discoveries. My favorite pieces in the collection are a charming character sketch called "Sunrise" by Gretchaninoff, the great Russian pedagogue, and "Lento" by Stravinsky. A giant in ...
