SPOTLIGHT: OUTFIELDERS

ANGELS Vladimir Guerrero is a fixture in right field and makes up for occasional careless plays with brilliant ones. CF Steve Finley is 39, but he's in great shape. His excellent range is something the team didn't have last season. ATHLETICS CF Mark Kotsay returns to anchor the outfield. His range is among the best in the league. LF Eric Byrnes has improved but needs more polish at the plate. Newcomer Charles Thomas has enough speed and range to push for a starting spot. BLUE JAYS Left field duties likely will be split between Frank Catalanotto, who's returning from abdominal surgery, and Reed Johnson. Johnson provides speed, defense and power. He'll start against lefthanders.

DEVIL RAYS LF Carl Crawford will slide into center until Rocco Baldelli (knee) returns. Crawford is an emerging star who could hit .310 and steal 75 bases this season. If Delmon Young, 19, shows he's ready to contribute, RF Jose Cruz could be traded at mid-season. INDIANS The team expects a motivated Juan Gonzalez to start in right field, which would put Casey Blake in left and Coco Crisp in center. If Gonzalez doesn't win a job, Blake could settle into right, with Crisp in left and Grady Sizemore in center. Regardless of who plays where, the outfield will have speed and enough power to be an offensive force. MARINERS The defense would be improved with rookie Jeremy Reed in center field and Randy Winn in left. But if Reed needs more minor league seasoning, the team could go with Winn in center and Raul Ibanez in left, an alignment that was decent in '04. ORIOLES With Jerry Hairston gone, Luis Matos will keep the center field job. Matos has natural skills but has been hampered by injuries and inconsistency. With Sammy Sosa in right, Jay Gibbons can fill the team's hole at first base. RANGERS New RF Richard Hidalgo adds a powerful arm and a potentially explosive bat.
