SARASOTA -- Ruth DeLuca, who taught music in downtown Sarasota for 65 years and played the viola with the Florida West Coast Symphony, died Jan. 30, of respiratory illness. She was 99.

"My grandmother was always active in the Sarasota Music Teacher's Association and was the composition chair for many years," said her granddaughter, Jenny Norwood of Sarasota. "She encouraged all her students to compose and held annual composition recitals and competitions."

DeLuca was born March 13, 1905, in Emporia, Kan., where her mother, a gifted pianist, taught her to play. She came to Sarasota in …
