How's this for back story: A Swedish denim expert named rjan Andersson and his friend Adam Friberg once owned a vintage store outside Stockholm, frequented by hard-core jeans addicts. It was called Weekend, and it was open only on Saturday and Sunday. Later, it moved to the city and was renamed Weekday because it was open all seven days. About two years ago, just as Scandinavian denim lines like Acne Jeans and Nudie began to gain momentum among the rocker set, Andersson had the idea for a line of inexpensive jeans-a gift to the regular Weekday customers, who'd grown tired of purchasing this premium (and not-so-premium) denim at $200 and upwards. Said cheap-jeans company, cofounded by Friberg and Lasse Karlsson, would be sold only on Mondays and would be called Cheap Monday. Washed dark, worn tight, and costing about 400 kronor (about $65), the first 800 pairs were gone in four days.
The question now is, How good can a $65 jean really be? The answer: Really good.
