The Maine Legislature is expected to consider a bill that would prohibit lobster dragging in state waters. The bill has the support of the Maine Lobstermen's Association. Already filed are bills that would repeal a 25-cents-per-box fine for smoked herring (other than boneless) packed in boxes smaller than 2" x 6" x 12" and a bill that would exempt from state sales taxes materials used in the construction of commercial lobster traps. Also, the Department of Marine Resources is seeking $50,000 to hire 10 additional wardens. The department currently employs 25 wardens.
