HOUSTON TEXANS

OFFSEASON GAME PLAN: The Texans need a receiver capable of taking pressure off WR Andre Johnson, The team must decide whether Corey Bradford, who is set to become a free agent, can fill that role. Houston moved Chester Pitts from left tackle to left guard to make room for Seth Wand, and the results weren't great. Should the team be patient with its left side or shuffle things again? Deciding whether to re-sign NT Seth Payne, who didn't have a great season, will be difficult because the Texans already have a ton of money committed to the defensive line. The team will try to find some pass-rushing help but expects LBs Antwan Peek and Jason Babin to help more in that area next season. FINAL GRADES: Offense: C-. The team was explosive at times early in the season but tailed off in the second half. Defense: C. It was just the opposite of the offense--bad start, good finish. Special teams: C. P Chad Stanley was hurt, K Kris Brown struggled with consistency, and the team doesn't have a game-breaking return man. Coaching: B-. Dora Capers has the Texans headed in the right direction.--Carlton Thompson

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS PLAYOFF READINESS ****

PLAYOFF PROGNOSIS: The team is in excellent health, so the outlook is favorable. QB Peyton Manning has all of his receiving weapons at his disposal, and just as important, RB Edgerrin James is at full strength. James likely will be crucial to the team's chances. With potential games at New England and Pittsburgh, where the weather could undermine the passing game, James will have to keep the offense moving. The defense has improved but remains the primary concern. It still allows an occasional over-the-top play in the passing game and can be gouged by a slashing runner. Rookie CB Jason David has settled down after a shaky start, but look for offenses to attack him. The defense will get a boost if rookie FS Bob Senders can stay on the field. In the season finale, he returned from a sprained knee. Sanders is a difference-maker. FINAL GRADES: Offense: A. One of the best ever. Defense: C+. RE Dwight Freeney sparked a unit that got better as the season unfolded. Special teams: B-. Kicking was solid, but coverage was inconsistent. Coaching:. B+. Shouldn't Tony Dungy be a Coach of the Year candidate?--Mike Chappell
