Come Valentine's Day, amorous Americans will spend $1 billion on candy, often boxed chocolates. Although many gift-givers won't look beyond familiar names such as Godiva or Russell Stover, the Internet has made it possible to order handmade, work-of-art chocolates from across the U.S. and around the world--the very ones that were among the best in our tests.
But when all the boxes are beautiful, it's hard to tell which are worth an extra $20 or $30. And without the old nibble-half-the-chocolate test, you don't know whether candies with unusual fillings such as peanut butter and banana, lavender-honey, or lemon cheesecake actually taste good.
