PHOTO PRINTERS DOES A 4x6 MEASURE UP?
A major reason to buy a digital camera is to choose, edit, and print only the images you want. Trouble is, few of us can match the speed and convenience of a one-hour lab. Small wonder that digital-photo processing services, both retail and Web-based, are thriving.
In response, printer manufacturers are selling compact, portable models that can bat out a 4x6-inch photo--right from the camera or memory card--in 1 to 2 1/2 minutes. Of the seven models we tested, the Hewlett-Packard and Epson printers are inkjets; the rest use dye-sublimation, an ink-free process. All but the Hewlett-Packard print water-resistant photos. Some will print slightly smaller or larger than 4x6.
These models have a couple of advantages:
* They're convenient. You needn't cut 4x6 prints from an 8 1/2x11 sheet.
* They're fast. Even the slowest models beat the fastest standard inkjets when turning out borderless 4x6 prints.
