Americans seem conflicted: Reluctant to give up the amenities, room, and vrrrooom to which they've grown accustomed in vehicles, they still want to be kind to the environment. Recognizing this reality, carmakers are starting to offer hybrid SUVs. The first is a version of Ford's small, car-based Escape.
The Escape Hybrid comes with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. A 330-volt nickel-metal-hydride battery pack hides under the cargo area. A 65-kilowatt electric motor augments the engine's power and can propel the vehicle by itself at low speeds. The gas engine/electric motor combination yields 155 horsepower. The transmission is a continuously variable (CVT) automatic. The vehicle comes in front or all-wheel drive.
