The U.S. surgeon general, Richard Carmona, has warned that by 2020 half of older Americans will be at risk of fractures from osteoporosis unless they take preventive steps now. At the top of Carmona's list: consuming plenty of calcium.
But calcium may have a number of health benefits beyond strengthening the skeleton. Emerging evidence indicates that it may lower the risk of colon cancer, reduce cholesterol levels and blood pressure, aid weight loss, and ease premenstrual symptoms. Yet the median intake of calcium from food by U.S. adults ranges from about 620 to 760 milligrams per day, well below the recommended amounts (see box below).
