In the largest action of its kind, Kyocera is recalling about 1 million of its cell-phone batteries because they may be unsafe counterfeits that could overheat, short-circuit, and cause skin burns.
This is the latest in a series of recent high-profile recalls involving cell-phone batteries with the potential to overheat, smoke, catch fire, or burst. Kyocera has also recalled 140,000 of its model 7135 Smartphones. Verizon Wireless recalled approximately 50,000 LG-branded batteries in June; the company says they were counterfeits.
The latest recall involves rechargeable lithium-ion batteries sold from December 2003 through September 2004 online and through wireless carriers such as Alltel, Cricket Communications, MetroPCS, US Cellular, and Verizon Wireless. The batteries came with various Kyocera Slider, K400, and 3200 Series phones or were sold separately for $30 to $60. Kyocera says it has received 14 reports of battery failures resulting in smoke, 2 minor burns, and slight property damage.
