Teaching jobs alleviate unemployment rate in Winston-Salem, N.C., region.

Sep. 25--The rehiring of public-school teachers for the 2006-07 academic year contributed to a big drop in the Triad's unemployment rate to 4.9 percent in August, the N.C. Employment Security Commission reported yesterday.

The decline reversed July's increase of four basis points to 5.3 percent.

The jobless rate in the Winston-Salem metropolitan statistical area -- which is composed of Davie, Forsyth, Stokes and Yadkin counties -- decreased to 4.3 percent from 4.7 percent in July.

Forsyth County's unemployment rate dropped to 4.4 percent from 4.7 percent in July.

There was a net gain of 2,300 government jobs …
