When 34-year-old Richard Donohue was diagnosed with cancer a year ago his Macmillan nurse was his biggest support.

The specialist nurse became his friend - a shoulder to cry on as well as someone to take care of his health.

When he heard that she could be among those facing the axe at Nottingham's two hospitals, he was devastated.

Strongly opposed to any staff cuts he said: "I have been a cancer patient at the City Hospital for just over a year and I can't tell you how amazing they are and what a valuable job they do.

"There are a lot of psychological things to deal with as well as physical things. It's not just for the patients but their family, friends and loved ones. They provide support for them as it affects everyone around them.

"They become like a friend. It is hard talking about your fears with your family, so it really helps having a professional to talk to." He is one of hundreds of patients and carers treated by specialist nurses at QMC and City Hospital who have rallied to their support.
