Sep. 24--BLOUNTSTOWN -- Some community leaders in this town of farmers, small-business owners and service-industry employees claim racism is behind the vocal group from nearby Altha who oppose consolidation.
But Altha leaders point out that black and white children in their city play basketball together on the weekends and that while a few adults may have some problems with race, the kids are all right.
Prejudice may or may not be a motivating factor in the consolidation quandary, but either way, consolidation has become a source of great turmoil among politicians, parents and other officials in Calhoun County.
