Sep. 23--PATTON TOWNSHIP -- Before Friday, everyone at Park Forest Elementary School knew that Brenda Hartman was an outstanding teacher.

Then it became official. In front of proud colleagues, Hartman received a 2006 American Star of Teaching award from the U.S. Department of Education for her innovation and dedication. Out of about 4,000 nominations nationally, the honor goes to just one teacher from each state and the District of Columbia. Hartman, 33, who teaches third- and fourth-graders, was the last to know.
