WHEN RIDLEY SCOTT'S Crusader epic Kingdom of Heaven was released theatrically in May last year Sir Ridley, as he had just become, announced that three-quarters of an hour had been removed from the film and this would be restored for the DVD release. At the time some of us thought the studio might have been concerned about Muslim or even Western sensitivities. The film was set in the late twelfth century at the time of the Battle of Hattin and the siege of Jerusalem, yet Saladin's mass execution of Templars was only suggested, as was the rape and murder of his sister that helped provoke the conflict.
